A Quiet Visa Rule Change is Costing Many SAP Merchants Six Figures a Year
If your business accepts Visa commercial cards through SAP, there’s a good chance you’re paying more on those transactions than you have to. Visa’s Commercial Enhanced Data Program (CEDP) changed how commercial card transactions qualify for preferred rates, and many SAP merchants don’t realize they’re now paying significantly more than they should. As of this spring, Visa quietly split commercial card processing into two tiers. Companies in the lower-cost tier pay around 1.75 to 2.05 percent on each transaction. Companies in the higher-cost tier pay 2.65 to 2.95 percent on the same transactions. That’s a 44 to 51 percent gap, applied to every commercial card payment your business accepts. Most SAP finance teams have no idea which tier they’re in.
What actually changed
The change is called the Commercial Enhanced Data Program, or CEDP. Visa rolled it out through 2025 and fully enforced it on April 18, 2026. It replaced the old Level 2 and Level 3 commercial card programs with a single framework. Under CEDP, every commercial card transaction is checked in real time. If the line-item data submitted with the transaction is complete and accurate, the transaction qualifies for the lower rate. If not, it doesn’t. Visa reviews the results monthly and assigns each merchant either verified or non-verified status. Same customer, same card, same purchase, two very different rates depending on which side of the line your business falls.
| Status | Interchange rate range | When it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Verified | 1.75% to 2.05% | Line-item data submitted with the transaction is complete and accurate. |
| Non-verified | 2.65% to 2.95% | Same transactions, but line-item data is missing required fields or fails validation. |

The good news for SAP merchants
Here’s the part of this story that doesn’t get told enough. The information Visa now requires, line-item product descriptions, quantities, tax handling, freight, customer purchase order references, is the same information your SAP environment was already built to capture. You’re not missing the data. It’s sitting in your system right now. The structural advantage SAP merchants have over the broader B2B market is real and significant. The harder question is whether that data is leaving your SAP environment in the format Visa’s automated checks expect, on every single transaction. That’s the part that quietly breaks for most companies, and it’s the part that determines whether your account earns the lower rate or pays the higher one.
Why most SAP merchants don’t know their status
The reasons accounts fall into non-verified status are usually mundane. A payment gateway truncating a product description into something generic like “MISC SALE.” A tax-exempt flag for a hospital or government buyer that doesn’t carry through to the Visa submission. Small data hiccups, big interchange consequences. None of this triggers an alert. Visa doesn’t email you to say your status changed. The information lives in places most finance teams don’t routinely check, like the interchange detail on processor statements, which is where the higher rates quietly show up as a small percentage difference month after month. You have to look for it.
What it’s costing the merchants who haven’t checked
For a mid-market SAP manufacturer running $60 million in annual Visa commercial card volume, the difference between verified and non-verified rates works out to roughly half a million dollars a year. Same transactions. Same customers. Different rate, purely because of how the data is being transmitted to the acquirer. Scale that math up or down for your own volume and the picture is the same: a meaningful number, paid quietly, every month, until someone catches it.

How SAP merchants can improve CEDP qualification
Two products in our portfolio map directly to where Visa commercial card transactions originate inside SAP. ChronarPay handles AR and invoice payments. It sits inside SAP ECC and S/4HANA, pulls the required line-item data directly from your billing records in real time, and transmits it to the acquirer in the format Visa’s automated checks expect. WECO eCommerce, a sister solution to ChronarPay within the CNBS portfolio, covers the storefront side, with the same line-item integrity applied at order checkout instead of invoice payment. Together, ChronarPay and WECO cover the full SAP revenue cycle, so commercial card transactions stay verification-ready whether your customer pays an invoice or completes an online order.
| Product | Where it fits in SAP | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| ChronarPay | AR and invoice payments | Pulls line-item data from SAP billing records in real time. |
| WECO eCommerce | Storefront and order checkout | Applies the same line-item integrity at order submission. |

Behind these solutions, we work with payment processing partners to help ensure the rich transaction data originating in SAP is transmitted in a format that supports Visa’s CEDP requirements. The combination of accurate ERP data, proper transmission, and processor support gives merchants the best opportunity to achieve and maintain verified status.
How to find out where you stand
The first step doesn’t require a project or a procurement cycle. It requires a 30-minute conversation. If you accept Visa commercial cards through SAP and aren’t certain whether your account is currently verified, our team can help review your payment environment and recent transaction activity to better understand your current CEDP status.
As part of this effort, one of our payment processing partners, Nuvei, has offered to provide a complimentary CEDP assessment. Together, we’ll review available processor reporting, discuss how commercial card data is being transmitted from SAP, and identify potential gaps that could be impacting interchange qualification and interchange costs.
No cost. No commitment. Just a clearer understanding of whether you’re capturing the savings available through Visa’s Commercial Enhanced Data Program.
